A Moss Point, Mississippi man has been sentenced to 37 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to robbing a bank in Mobile, Alabama earlier this year.
According to court records, Joseph Deric Nelson, 67, entered the Family Security Credit Union branch in Mobile on March 19, 2025. Disguised and carrying a note that claimed he was armed with a gun and explosives, Nelson demanded money from a teller. The teller complied by placing cash into an envelope for him.
As Nelson left the credit union, a witness from inside the bank followed him first on foot and then in a vehicle. The witness was able to alert officers from the Mobile Police Department, who quickly apprehended Nelson.
Nelson will serve his sentence in the Bureau of Prisons and upon release will be subject to three years of supervised release.
U.S. Attorney Sean Costello of the Southern District of Alabama announced the sentencing. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Mobile Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tandice Blackwood prosecuted the case.
