The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced a lane closure on the I-20 westbound bridge over the Coosa River in Riverside, set to begin on October 2. This maintenance project will restrict traffic to a single lane for up to seven days.

Motorists and businesses in the area are advised to prepare for potential traffic delays due to these critical repairs. ALDOT recommends that westbound passenger cars and trucks wider than ten feet use US-78 West at Exit 165 as an alternative route. Temporary traffic controls will be installed at the Honda Drive intersection with US-78, allowing northbound vehicles to make uninterrupted turns onto US-78. The US-78 bridge over the Coosa River will become a one-way path to maintain traffic flow towards I-20 westbound, requiring eastbound drivers using this bridge into Lincoln to take Exit 168 instead.

Since its opening in 1963, traffic volume over these bridges has increased significantly, with approximately 10,000 trucks crossing daily in each direction. ALDOT is addressing immediate maintenance needs while planning a comprehensive future replacement of the I-20 bridge.
