U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) addressed the Senate on what he described as a significant national security threat to the United States: radical Islamic extremism. During his speech, Tuberville recounted several terrorist attacks in the U.S. over the past two decades that he said were inspired by extremist interpretations of Islam, including incidents at Fort Hood, the Boston Marathon, San Bernardino, Orlando, and Pensacola.
Tuberville criticized current immigration and security policies, stating, "Thanks to Joe Biden, thousands of people on the suspected terrorist watchlist were allowed to enter this country over the past four years. Islamic extremism and Sharia Law openly called for the destruction of America and Western culture."
He expressed concern about what he sees as an increasing influence of extremist ideologies in American cities such as Minneapolis, Dearborn, Portland, Chicago, and New York City. He also criticized some members of Congress for their positions regarding Hamas: "It’s been two years and two U.S. congresswomen, Omar and Tlaib, still refused to condemn these heinous crimes in Israel. These two members were elected to represent American citizens. And they are sympathizing with Islamic terrorists instead."
Tuberville drew comparisons between Europe and the United States regarding migration and its impact on society: "If we aren’t careful, the United States will look like Europe in ten years or less." He cited concerns about crime rates and political appointments in the UK related to immigration policy.
He also spoke about women’s rights under Sharia Law in some countries: "In Muslim countries that follow Sharia Law, it is considered normal for women to be raped, trafficked, and forced to marry as young as [the] age of six." Tuberville claimed that there has been little criticism from Democrats or feminist groups regarding treatment of women under such systems.
Tuberville further referenced violence against Christians in Nigeria by extremist groups: "More than 62,000 Christians have been slaughtered since 2000 by radical Islamic terrorists in Nigeria."
In his concluding remarks, Tuberville advocated for strict measures against those who practice Sharia Law: "If you believe that Sharia Law supersedes American law, you should be deported immediately." He commended Texas for banning Sharia Law at the state level and urged other states to do likewise.
He stated his hope for bipartisan support on this issue: "This isn’t about a Republican or Democrat issue. It’s an American issue. I hope my Democrat colleagues will join me in sending a loud, clear message that we will not tolerate Sharia Law in this country. Not now, not ever.”
Senator Tuberville serves Alabama in the U.S. Senate and sits on several committees including Armed Services; Agriculture; Veterans’ Affairs; HELP; and Aging.
