In September, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) reported that 32% of small business owners nationwide had job openings they could not fill, a figure unchanged from August. This percentage has not dropped below 32% since July 2020. According to the report, 28% of owners were seeking skilled workers, while 13% were looking for unskilled workers; both numbers remained steady compared to the previous month.
Rosemary Elebash, NFIB Alabama State Director, said these national findings also apply to conditions in Alabama. “When Main Street can’t find workers, customers feel it in longer waits and reduced service,” she said. “Every unfilled job holds back not just a small business, but the local economy that depends on it.”
