Edwards Cordell Burks, Jr., a resident of Mobile, Alabama, has been sentenced to 92 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Jeffrey Beaverstock.
Court documents reveal that in November 2024, the Mobile Police Department (MPD) responded to reports of two individuals being treated for gunshot wounds at a local hospital. Following an investigation involving victims and witnesses, Burks was identified as a suspect. Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the shooting incident, with Burks appearing to be the shooter. Three bullet casings were retrieved from the crime scene off Spring Hill Avenue.
A "be on the lookout" notice was issued for Burks. Two days after the shooting, an MPD officer spotted him walking near the crime scene and detained him. A loaded firearm was found in his waistband. The firearm matched casings from the scene through analysis by the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), confirming it was used in the earlier shooting.
Judge Beaverstock imposed a 92-month prison term along with three years of supervised release following Burks' discharge from prison. Additionally, state assault charges related to the shootings are pending against him.
The case was investigated by both the Mobile Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Beth Stepan prosecuted on behalf of the United States.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations while protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators.
