The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is urging consumers to support local businesses during the upcoming sales-tax holiday. The tax-free weekend, scheduled for July 19-21, covers items such as computers, clothing, school supplies, and books below a certain price threshold.
Rosemary Elebash, NFIB State Director, emphasized the importance of small businesses in the economy. "Small business is the cornerstone of our economy," she stated. Elebash highlighted that while chain stores and online platforms may offer attractive deals, local businesses provide unique shopping experiences and personalized service. "Small businesses also offer unique products and better service because the owners are passionate about what they do."
Elebash further noted the community benefits of shopping locally: "When you shop locally, you help your neighbors keep their jobs, support local growth, and ensure that the money you spend stays in the community."
This year's tax-free weekend arrives at a time when both small businesses and consumers are dealing with increasing prices. The recently released NFIB Small Business Optimism Index identifies rising prices as the primary challenge facing Main Street businesses.
"These are tough economic times for everyone," Elebash remarked. She suggested that supporting local businesses is an effective way to maintain strong communities.
