A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Centreville City Council in Alabama on October 15, 2024. The request was made by us at Yellowhammer Times, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The records requested under the Alabama Open Records Law § 36-12-40 et seq., include a list of all council members with specific details. These details are their names, titles, years of appointment, term lengths (whether two or four years), and term expiry dates. We have asked for these records preferably in an electronic format.
As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We await the response from the Centreville City Council regarding this FOIA request. This action forms part of our ongoing commitment to ensure transparency and accountability within local government bodies.
