Washington, D.C., – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), the Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee for the Senate Committee on Appropriations, on June 22, 2023 voted against the proposed 302(b) spending levels proposed by the committee’s majority for the upcoming fiscal year.

These spending levels set the topline number for each of the 12 Appropriations subcommittees.

At a time of record crossings at the southern border and an influx of deadly fentanyl into the United States, the proposal advanced by Democrats on the committee makes a 6% cut in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s base budget and funds DHS at a lower level than in both Fiscal Year 2022 and 2023.

“When the President sent us a budget proposal earlier this year with a 1% cut, it was unacceptable. This 6% cut that has now been proposed by Senate Democrats will be devastating to critical efforts to secure our country’s southern border and stop the massive influx of deadly fentanyl into our communities. At a time when our enemies such as China, Russia, and Iran are becoming increasingly more aggressive, we must ensure that our nation is safe and strong. The 302(b) allocations advanced today on a partisan basis woefully fail to properly defend our homeland and invest in national defense modernization that ensures our warfighters remain the best equipped, resourced, and trained in the world,” said Senator Katie Britt.
