Online Job Ads in March Up 51% From Last Year

Data collected and analyzed by the Alabama Department of Labor’s Labor Market Information (LMI) Division shows that as of March 2022, the yearly comparison of online job ads is 105,241, up 51% from March 2021. The monthly total of online job ads for March 2022 is up 12.6% with 35,657 new online ads.

The five occupations with the most online job ads continue to be for registered nurses, retail salespersons, sales representatives, supervisors of retail salespersons, and heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers with 17,742 ads placed for those occupations in March.

The HWOL data is compiled from all online job postings in the state, including those posted on the state’s free online jobs database, AlabamaWorks.alabama.gov, and other sources, such as traditional job boards, corporate boards, and social media sites.

Twenty percent of job ads have salaries of $75,000 and above; 17% have salaries in the $50-75,000 range; 22% have salaries in the $35-49,000 range; and 41% have salaries of $35,000 or under.

The top two employers posting the most online ads in February were Huntsville Hospital with 1,547 and UAB Health System with 1,514. The rest of the top 10 were: Baptist Health (630), Walmart / Sam’s (617) University of South Alabama (590), Regions (563), Encompass Health (549), East Alabama Medical Center (540), Auburn University (493), and Lowe’s (479).

This month's HWOL Occupation Focus is Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers. This occupation drives a tractor-trailer combination or a truck with a capacity of at least 26,001 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW); may be required to unload truck; requires commercial drivers' license; includes tow truck drivers. These occupations typically require a high school diploma, 1 year of on-the-job training and a commercial drivers license (CDL). The advertised median salary for Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers is $70,920. In the last 12 months there was a 38% increase in online ads for this occupation. This occupation has Average Annual Openings of 4,375 statewide in Alabama.
