Cekra Inc. has been contracted for $420,000 to paint two overpasses in Alabama, aiming to extend their lifespan by protecting steel parts from the elements. The project includes the "useless overpass" on US-231/SR-53/South Memorial Parkway in Huntsville and an overpass on I-759 in Gadsden. Painting is part of ongoing rehabilitation efforts for bridges like those on I-65 over the Tennessee River.
Work on the Huntsville overpass, located between Drake Avenue and Airport Road, will commence on Monday, November 10. According to the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), service road U-turn lanes under this structure will be closed continuously until noon on Wednesday, November 26, though through lanes will remain open. Constructed in the late 1960s as one of the first Memorial Parkway overpasses, it earned its nickname because it does not span a roadway intersection. However, motorists still find its U-turn lanes beneficial.
In Gadsden, painting of the Eastside Drive bridge over I-759 will begin on Monday, November 17. Cekra plans to close one lane at a time for several days while work is done overhead before moving closures to another lane. This operation will pause at noon on Wednesday, November 26, and resume on Monday, December 1. ALDOT expects completion by mid-December if weather conditions allow.
