The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is progressing with its US-280 widening project by installing the first girders for the new Pumphouse Road Bridge. This task necessitates a complete traffic closure to safely place the 100-foot beams across the highway.

Starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, ALDOT will close all lanes of US-280 at Pumphouse Road. Eastbound lanes will remain closed until Monday morning, November 17, while westbound lanes will reopen each morning at 5 a.m. and close again at 11 p.m. All lanes are expected to be open by 6 a.m. on Monday, November 17.

During this period, the existing Pumphouse Road Bridge and its ramps will stay open. ALDOT anticipates significant delays and advises travelers to plan alternate routes through the area now. The recommended detour is via Lakeshore Parkway to I-65 to I-459 back to US-280.

Following next week's nighttime girder installation, most bridge replacement work will occur during daylight hours as previously planned. Future weekend closures are anticipated to complete the phased construction of the bridge.

ALDOT expresses gratitude for public patience during this project aimed at increasing US-280 capacity by Fall 2026.
