The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Highway Safety Office (HSO) has announced the availability of grant funding opportunities. These grants are intended to support projects, programs, and initiatives aimed at reducing deaths and injuries related to motor vehicle crashes across the state. Local governments, law enforcement agencies, safety partners, and non-profit organizations in Alaska are invited to apply for this funding to enhance roadway safety.
Eligible projects may focus on reducing impaired driving, increasing occupant protection—such as seatbelt and child car seat usage—and improving safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. The application period remains open until April 30, 2025.
For those interested in applying, detailed information about the grant application process is available on the Alaska DOT&PF Highway Safety Office's grant website. Additionally, an informational webinar is scheduled for April 9, 2025.
In addition to these grants, the DOT&PF offers further roadway safety funding through its Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). This program supports infrastructure projects that aim to reduce serious injuries and fatalities by using crash data to identify high-risk areas. Communities can work with regional Traffic and Safety Engineers to propose projects under this initiative.
More details about Alaska DOT&PF’s safety plans can be found on the department's Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) website. The SHSP outlines strategies and actions designed collaboratively with public and private partners to minimize fatalities and serious injuries on Alaska's roads.
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities manages a wide range of infrastructure including airports, ferries serving numerous communities along marine routes, highways, and public facilities throughout Alaska. The department's mission is “Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.”
