The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT&PF) has announced its highway and aviation construction projects for the 2025 season, projecting an estimated $900 million in construction awards. This marks an increase from previous years. Preliminary maps for the planned projects can be accessed online.
DOT&PF has developed several tools to help the public track these projects across the state. The 2025 construction maps and Tentative Advertising Schedule are vital for planning purposes in both public and private sectors. Additionally, interactive maps covering the 2024-2027 construction programs are available on the Capital Project Dashboard.
The department is preparing for a strong season but acknowledges challenges such as rising project costs, Federal Buy America/Build America supply chain shortages, federal funding release timeframes, and right of way acquisition issues. Utility companies face difficulties securing compliant materials, affecting progress on key projects like the Kenai Spur Highway Rehabilitation and Sterling Highway Safety Corridor.
To mitigate these challenges, DOT&PF is taking steps to improve efficiency and reduce delays by breaking large projects into smaller phases to boost contractor participation. Financial tools are being used to accelerate funding, while close collaboration with utilities and federal agencies aims to resolve supply chain and regulatory issues. Increasing project delivery resources and enhancing coordination with industry partners are also part of their strategy.
DOT&PF is utilizing the Construction Manager/General Contractor approach for high-risk or high-value projects, allowing contractors to engage during the design phase before transitioning smoothly to construction after cost negotiations. Notable CM/GC projects scheduled for 2025 include Cooper Landing Bypass and Parks Highway MP 319–325 Reconstruction.
The department remains committed to delivering a robust construction program that strengthens Alaska’s transportation network while supporting economic growth. By adopting innovative project management strategies and fostering collaboration with industry partners, DOT&PF aims for transparency and efficiency in executing these projects.
The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities manages 237 airports, nine ferries serving 35 communities along 3,500 marine miles, over 5,600 miles of highway, and 839 public facilities throughout Alaska. Their mission is “Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure.”
