A federal jury has found Jaylin Artez Patton, 29, of Birmingham, Alabama, guilty on multiple drug and gun charges. The verdict was announced by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona following three days of testimony in front of U.S. District Court Judge Annemarie C. Axon.
Patton was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a machinegun, possession of fentanyl, and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime.
Evidence presented at the trial showed that officers from the Birmingham Police Department, with help from agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), attempted to stop Patton to execute an arrest warrant. According to the evidence, Patton fled in his vehicle and eventually drove off the interstate into a ditch and through a fence before fleeing on foot. Officers apprehended him after a short pursuit and recovered fentanyl as well as a Glock pistol modified with a device known as a “Glock switch,” which converted it into a machinegun.
The case was investigated by the ATF and the Birmingham Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys William R. McComb and Darius Greene are prosecuting.
