U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has joined with Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) to cosponsor the Unlocking Benefits for Independent Workers Act. The legislation is intended to create a federal safe harbor that would allow companies to voluntarily provide employee benefits, such as retirement and health care, to independent contract workers.

The bill aims to extend workplace protections and benefits typically available only to full-time employees. Supporters argue that it will adapt labor laws to meet the needs of an evolving workforce.

“Our labor laws are in desperate need of modernizing,” said Sen. Tuberville. “Our independent contract workers shouldn’t be barred from accessing their hard-earned health care and retirement benefits. The workforce is ever evolving in President Trump’s America First economy, and our bill takes great strides to make sure American workers are protected.”

Senators Ted Budd (R-NC) and Tim Scott (R-SC) also joined as cosponsors of the measure.

Senator Tuberville serves on several Senate committees, including Armed Services, Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs, HELP, and Aging.
