An emergency repair project on a 13-mile stretch of I-59 in DeKalb County is set to start on Monday, July 14. Vulcan Materials, the contractor for the project, will work on repairing and replacing some of the concrete slabs on both northbound and southbound lanes between Exit 205 at SR-68 in Collinsville and Exit 218 at SR-35 in Fort Payne. The project also includes milling and paving sections of the asphalt overlay. Drivers should be prepared for daily single-lane closures in either direction. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) expects to complete this nearly $1 million project by September.
As the concrete slabs age and deteriorate, they cause bumps in the asphalt overlay. This current plan is a temporary solution while planning for a permanent fix is underway. ALDOT has plans to fully reconstruct this segment of I-59 through two future projects as part of ongoing efforts to reconstruct much of the I-59 corridor in DeKalb County and northern Etowah County.
ALDOT has engaged a consultant to design the reconstruction of the northbound roadway between Collinsville and Fort Payne, with construction anticipated to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. Preliminary engineering for the southbound roadway has recently been authorized, with plans to let this project in 2027.
