The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has initiated a project to enhance operations on State Route 35 near Interstate 59 in Fort Payne. Bids for the project were opened on June 27, with Wiregrass Construction submitting the lowest bid at $4,997,900 among three bidders.
The project aims to improve the functionality of SR-35 intersections with Jordan Road/Airport Road, the I-59 interchange ramps at Exit 218, and Briarwood Avenue. Planned enhancements include signal upgrades and construction of auxiliary lanes on SR-35 northbound from I-59 southbound to Medical Center Drive and SR-35 southbound from west of Jordan Road to I-59 southbound. Additionally, a right turn lane will be added from SR-35 northbound to I-59 northbound. The start of construction is contingent upon bid review and contract award, with work expected to begin in early 2026 following material procurement.
In ALDOT's June letting, several other projects were also announced. Resurfacing of 3.8 miles of SR-79 in Jackson County received two bids, with Rogers Group submitting the lowest bid at $1,123,350. A lane reconfiguration on SR-168 from Darnell Street to US-431 in Boaz attracted three bids; Vulcan Materials, Asphalt and Construction offered the lowest bid at $1,037,672. For adding a center turn lane and widening on SR-184/Second Street east of Sheffield in Colbert County, MLMD submitted the lowest bid at $1,322,735. This project will be funded by the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvements Program-II (ATRIP-II). Lastly, Gillespie Construction provided the lowest bid of $1,087,319 for constructing acceleration and turn lane extensions and installing traffic signals on US-431 at Green Valley Road.
