The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is advising drivers to be cautious and plan their journeys carefully during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, anticipating increased traffic across the state. To facilitate smooth travel, ALDOT will suspend temporary lane closures on interstates from noon on Thursday, July 3, until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. This measure aims to ensure the safety of both motorists and construction and maintenance crews.

ALDOT has issued several safety tips for drivers this holiday weekend. Motorists are encouraged to eliminate distractions by avoiding activities such as texting or talking on the phone while driving. The department reminds drivers that Alabama enforces a hands-free law prohibiting the use of handheld electronic devices while operating a vehicle.

Seat belts are highlighted as essential for protection against serious injury in crashes, with ALDOT urging all passengers to buckle up properly. Additionally, drivers are advised to avoid impaired driving by staying sober behind the wheel, as alcohol and drugs can impair reaction times and judgment.

Speeding is also discouraged due to its role in increasing the risk of accidents and making it difficult to react to sudden hazards. Drivers should adhere to posted speed limits and adjust their speed according to traffic, weather, and road conditions.

For those planning their travel routes over the holiday weekend, ALDOT provides real-time traffic updates and road condition information through ALGOTraffic.com or via the ALGO Traffic app. The department requests that users engage with these resources responsibly.
