Alabama's Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has released a new episode in its "Zero to 60" series, focusing on the increasing use of roundabouts on the state's roads. The episode highlights the advantages of roundabouts, which are becoming more prevalent across Alabama.
Aaron White, ALDOT Southeast Region’s Local Transportation and Special Projects Engineer, describes how roundabouts function: "A roundabout is a circular intersection where traffic flows around a center island. Slow down as you approach and yield to your left. Once it’s clear, enter the roundabout and keep moving at a steady pace. Use your turn signal and exit safely."
White emphasizes that roundabouts are not just a trend but have been proven to enhance safety and traffic efficiency. He notes that they can reduce serious crashes by up to 80% compared to traditional intersections while also improving traffic flow and reducing fuel consumption. "The data backs it up," says White, highlighting their effectiveness in managing traffic safely.
Roundabouts also offer improved pedestrian safety. With crosswalks positioned away from the circle and slower vehicle speeds, drivers have more time to react, providing a safer environment for pedestrians. Visuals in the episode show pedestrians using crosswalks near roundabouts, underscoring their safety benefits for both drivers and pedestrians. As White states, "Roundabouts improve safety for everyone, including people walking near the intersection."
The state is seeing an increase in roundabout installations as part of its focus on traffic safety. "With all these benefits, it’s no surprise that roundabouts are showing up in more communities across Alabama," White notes. He adds that more are planned, marking them as a long-term investment in enhancing road safety and efficiency.
