Gov. Kay Ivey recently visited Demopolis to emphasize a $2 million transportation project as part of her Rebuild Alabama initiative. Accompanied by Demopolis Mayor Woody Collins, local leaders, and officials from the Alabama Department of Transportation, Gov. Ivey highlighted the project's significance during an event at Rooster Hall.
The project, funded through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II (ATRIP-II) and the Rebuild Alabama Act, aims to enhance access management along U.S. Highway 80 from Maria Avenue to Lake Lane. Gov. Ivey remarked, "Since signing the Rebuild Alabama Act into law, we’ve tackled more than 400 major road and bridge projects in all 67 counties." She added that the developments in Demopolis exemplify how Rebuild Alabama is intended to function: with state support, local leadership, and a commitment to equitable progress across communities.
The governor's visit also underscored a broader announcement of over $40 million in state transportation funding for various cities and counties throughout Alabama.
The ATRIP-II program was established in 2019 by the Rebuild Alabama Act and is funded by a portion of new state gas tax revenue. It supports local interest projects on the state highway system without requiring a local match, although sponsors may contribute additional funds. To date, ATRIP-II has allocated more than $200 million in state funds for infrastructure improvements statewide.
