Travelers on I-65 near Greenville will soon benefit from a newly rebuilt rest area, as the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) nears completion of the project. The old facility has been replaced with a modern stop designed to enhance capacity, comfort, and accessibility.

The new rest area features expanded restroom facilities, including two men's restrooms, two women's restrooms, and two family restrooms equipped with changing tables. "We’re increasing the type and amount of service that ALDOT can provide to the public," said Justin Shiver, Project Manager at Thompson Engineering.

Parking capacity has also been improved to accommodate more passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses. Additional amenities include new picnic pavilions and expanded sidewalks.

Accessibility is a key focus of the new design. The facility is fully ADA compliant with accessible ramps, sidewalks with compliant cross slopes, appropriately positioned countertop and switch heights, and push-button automatic doors at the entrance.

With final touches such as roofing and interior fixtures underway, the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. This revitalized rest area aims to offer a safer and more comfortable stop for travelers while enhancing local traffic flow and tourism appeal.
