In the rolling hills of northwest Alabama, the Hamilton District operates as one of the state's largest linear-mile districts. The team is responsible for maintaining state and federal routes across Marion and Winston counties. Their duties range from roadway maintenance to traffic control and weather-related events.
District Administrator Wes Spiller has spent 13 of his nearly 23 years with ALDOT in Hamilton, overseeing a 37-person maintenance team. "An average day here is fast-paced, and we’re usually behind," Spiller noted. He emphasized the team's ability to balance travel projects with routine maintenance despite challenges like road concerns and budget issues.
The district's team has cultivated a family-like atmosphere that extends beyond work hours. "It may be dysfunctional from time to time, but it’s still a family," Spiller remarked. This camaraderie contributes to their reputation for reliability across Alabama.
Hamilton's team is known for its willingness to tackle challenges, whether assisting after hurricanes or responding to winter weather. "Their good character doesn’t come from always getting it right," Spiller said. "What defines them is their refusal to give up."
Spiller highlighted the frontline employees—Transportation Maintenance Technicians, Equipment Mechanics, Administrative Support Assistants, and Stock Clerks—as key contributors to the district's success. "They’re free thinkers who take pride in their work," he said.
Success in the Hamilton District is defined by character and commitment rather than accolades. It’s about maintaining roads and supporting each other with dedication.
