Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed HB 2035 into law, blocking attempts from the federal government to work with local authorities to enforce gun control laws.
State Rep. Jody Barrett (R-Dickson) introduced HB 2035 during legislative session.
The bill “preempts the entire field of legislation regarding extreme risk protection orders to the exclusion of all county, city, town, municipality, or metropolitan government law, ordinances, resolutions, enactments, or regulation.”
The bill also prohibits any level of government within the state from accepting a grant or funding for the purpose of creating a rule or regulation enforce an extreme risk protection order on citizens.
The legislation also includes a provision which requires any individual, including law enforcement officers, who try to enforce a federal extreme risk protection order against a Tennessee resident will be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.
“The right to bear arms is the cornerstone of our freedom and democracy,” Rep. Barrett said. ”This law ensures that Tennesseans’ Second Amendment rights are safeguarded against any attempts by the failing Biden administration and local governments to diminish our freedoms. And sends the message that we will not stand idly by as our liberties are threatened.”
