Alabama State University issued the following announcement on Oct. 26.
On Saturday, Oct. 24, Alabama State University crowed Yasmine Whitehurst its 81st Miss ASU during the University’s in-person coronation in the John Garrick Hardy Student Center Ballroom.
Due to COVID-19, only immediate family, friends and ASU administrators attended. The event was live streamed on Facebook, offering the opportunity for more to be a part of the 2020 Coronation.
The event was Mask Mandatory and all who were in attendance were tested for the virus.
The small, but elegant coronation not only honored Miss ASU, but her Royal Court as well. The outgoing queen, Jhaianne Cooper, and queens of each campus organization also were acknowledged.
In keeping with the coronation theme, “The Forgotten Queendom: Retracing Our Culture,” there were a variety of African rhythms and dramatic performances. The theme spotlighted the “forgotten” culture of Ancient Nubia, in hopes of understanding the African American roots, and to bring empowerment by our rich history.
“The Coronation is a beautiful event where the Queen is officially crowned as Miss Alabama State University. I am very grateful to share this special moment with everyone who has helped me make it this far. It is such a blessing to still have a full and safe ceremony even amidst a pandemic. I am sending thanks to each individual who helped my vision come to life,” Whitehurst said.
President Quinton T. Ross Jr. administered Whitehurst her oath of office, but not before taking the dance floor for the traditional dance with the incoming Miss ASU.
“Taking on the responsibility of Miss ASU is steep in tradition,” Ross said. “I know your reign will exceed expectations.”
Whitehurst, a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, is a 23-year-old senior who is an Interdisciplinary Studies major with three minors – business, general education and physical education. After graduation, she plans to own a dance/fitness center and start a luxury wig collection.
As Miss ASU, Whitehurst’s platform, “Elevate the C.U.L.T.U.R.E.,” will focus on strengthening students’ resolute to succeed by advocating for programs designed to support students’ collegiate journey. She has already executed a variety of her initiatives, such as the Build-A-Hornet Mentoring Program and Hornet Day of Service.
“ASU stole my heart with its charm, academics and rich history,” Whitehurst said. “I’m proud to be a Hornet.”
The 2020-21 Royal Court is Tiffany Bailey, Miss Senior; Dy’Oni Charlton, Miss Junior; Daniya Mitchell, Miss Sophomore; and Justice Murphy, Miss Freshman.
The outgoing Court is Jhaianne Cooper, Miss ASU (2019-2020); Ivana Angion, 1st Attendant; Saroyah Johnson, 2nd Attendant; Tiffany Bailey, Miss Junior; Mariah McClary, Miss Sophomore; and Stacey Foster, Miss Freshman.
