The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is set to introduce new speed limits in the school zone on SR-59 near Baldwin Preparatory Academy in Loxley. This decision follows requests from local school and public safety officials aiming to enhance safety for students, staff, and motorists.
The changes will see the speed limit approaching the school zone reduced from 65 mph to 55 mph, while within the school zone itself, it will drop from 55 mph to 40 mph. These adjustments are intended to be effective during peak school hours: morning drop-off between 7:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m., and afternoon pick-up from 2:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.
James Gordon, spokesperson for ALDOT's Southwest Region, emphasized the importance of these changes by stating, "Slowing down might feel like a big deal — but through Baldwin Prep’s 1.1-mile school zone, dropping from 65 mph to 40 mph adds just 37 seconds to your drive. It could save a life and that’s time well spent."
Motorists are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to the new speed limits during these specified times as part of efforts to create a safer environment around the school.
