U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has joined other lawmakers in introducing a resolution to recognize June 23-29, 2025, as National Women’s Sports Week. The initiative highlights his ongoing efforts in Congress to support women’s athletics and advocate for policies he says protect the integrity of women’s sports.

“During my 40-year coaching career, I saw firsthand the doors that Title IX opened for women by giving them access to the same resources, facilities, and scholarships as men,” said Senator Tuberville. “Unfortunately, Radical Democrats are slamming those doors in the faces of girls across the country by allowing men to compete in women’s sports. From the court to the gym, these female athletes have left their blood, sweat, and tears out on the field and deserve fair and equal competition. National Women’s Sports Week is an opportunity to celebrate women’s success, inspire future generations, and recommit us to ensuring that every young woman has the chance to pursue her athletic dreams.”

Recent developments have brought renewed attention to this issue. According to data cited by Tuberville's office, over 900 women lost medals due to male participation in women's events during President Biden's administration. The topic gained traction during the 2024 Presidential Election as one of voters’ top concerns. A New York Times poll found that nearly four out of five respondents opposed men competing in women’s sports; this view included a majority of Democrats.

In February 2025, President Trump signed an executive order prohibiting men from participating in women’s sports categories. However, since executive orders can be rescinded by subsequent administrations, Senator Tuberville introduced legislation—the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act—to make such a ban permanent. On March 3, 2025, Senate Democrats blocked this bill from advancing.

Earlier this year, Tuberville also reintroduced another bill aimed at preventing male athletes from joining U.S. Olympic teams designated for women.

Senator Tuberville serves Alabama as a member of several Senate committees: Armed Services; Agriculture; Veterans’ Affairs; Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP); and Aging.
