The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has announced overnight closures for the Bankhead and Wallace Tunnels on Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 98 in Mobile. These closures are scheduled over the next few weeks to conduct routine inspections required every two years, ensuring tunnel safety and reliability.
To minimize traffic disruption, the closures will occur overnight. ALDOT advises motorists to plan accordingly and use alternate routes during these times.
The Bankhead Tunnel will be closed from approximately 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday night, June 17; Wednesday night, June 18; and Sunday night, June 22. Motorists can use I-10 and I-165 as alternate routes.
For the Wallace Tunnel, westbound closures are scheduled from approximately 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday night, June 23, and Tuesday night, June 24. Eastbound closures will occur on Wednesday night, June 25, and Thursday night, June 26. I-165 is recommended as an alternate route.
Detour signs will be placed during all closures to assist drivers. "ALDOT appreciates your patience as we perform this important maintenance work to keep our roads and tunnels safe," said ALDOT.
