A resurfacing project on Interstate 65 in Morgan County is set to commence next week, with work scheduled to begin on the evening of Monday, June 16, weather permitting. The $16.1 million initiative will cover the stretch from Hurricane Creek, north of Vinemont in Cullman County, to one mile south of the I-565 interchange (Exit 340) in Limestone County.
The contractor, Rogers Group, will handle the resurfacing of a total of 23.4 miles of interstate. The project is divided into two main phases: this year, work will focus on the segment south of SR-36 in Hartselle; resurfacing north of SR-36 is planned for 2026.
To minimize traffic disruptions, lane closures are scheduled primarily between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., from Sunday nights through Thursday nights. ALDOT has advised motorists to anticipate delays due to single-lane closures. Initial milling and paving operations are set to start north of Lacon (Exit 318) in southern Morgan County.
In addition to resurfacing, bridge repair and raising activities are included in the project scope. Later this month, repairs will begin on the Upper River Road bridge over I-65 in Priceville after it was damaged by improperly loaded equipment on a trailer in late April. This repair will be conducted as a supplement to the original contract. The project also involves raising the Parker Road bridge over I-65 in Hartselle.
ALDOT plans to release further details regarding scheduling and plans for these bridge-related activities soon.
