A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Centreville Finance Department regarding city sales tax records on October 31, 2024. The request was made by us at Yellowhammer Times, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
We are seeking access to public records under the Alabama Open Records Law § 36-12-40 et seq., specifically requesting a list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. The information we requested includes the business name, business type, and the amount of sales tax each business paid during this period.
In addition to this detailed list, we also asked for the total amount of sales tax that the city collected within the same timeframe. This data is crucial in our mission to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to our readers about how their tax dollars are being used within their community.
As members of the media, we play an essential role in gathering and reporting news to the public. Accessing these public records will allow us to fulfill our professional responsibilities more effectively. In line with this objective, we have requested a fee waiver as media professionals in recognition of our role in disseminating important information to the public.
We await a response from the City Of Centreville Finance Department and look forward to sharing this information with our readers upon receipt.
