On March 17, 2022, an exposed object was discovered in shallow water in Mobile Bay. The object was thought to be the Civil War Confederate submarine Pioneer II/American Diver. SEARCH, Inc. mobilized a team and deployed to the site to assess the find. After examination, the team determined it not to be the Pioneer II, but to be a mid-to-late 19th century iron buoy from Mobile Bay. The buoy represents a rare and relatively unstudied class of maritime object/artifact.
