Alabama State University issued the following announcement on July 22.

An academic panel has recognized Alabama State University's dean of Library and Learning Resources as one of the nation's top library administrators.

ASU's Dr. Janice R. Franklin has been awarded the Ann Barnett Service Award by Texas Woman's University (TWU) for exemplary adherence to the principles and purposes of librarianship and professional education as demonstrated by "sensitivity and responsiveness to people’s needs."

Franklin received a plaque and a cash award.

"It is truly an honor for me to receive this award, and I am humbled to accept it," Franklin said.

According to a spokeswoman for TWU, Franklin was a standout to win the honor for a number of reasons, including being a catalyst for the $20 million expansion and renovation of Alabama State University's Levi Watkins Learning Center and helping to create in it a “cultural learning place.” She was also noted for being the driving force behind the endowment that established ASU's National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture.

The award also noted her leadership that led to the establishment of the Montgomery Interpretive Center on ASU's campus in partnership with the National Park Service. The Center teaches and honors the history of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March of 1965, which Alabama State University helped play such an important role in bringing to its fruition.

"My many opportunities at ASU have allowed me to win this award and move up the ladder of library sciences with the support and encouragement of the University's leaders who allowed me to best utilize my doctoral degree and contribute to our incredible school and its historic mandate of civil rights leadership and educational scholarship for our students," Franklin said.

Franklin currently serves as chair of the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries and as a member of the University of Alabama School of Library Information Studies Advisory Board.
