Alabama State University issued the following announcement on Feb. 28.

Alabama State University Department of Theatre Arts presents its BFA Dance Program Spring Concert titled, Iconic Voices on March 12-14 at 7 p.m. at the Leila Barlow Theatre in the Tullibody Fine Arts Complex.

The performance features choreography by faculty members James Atkinson, Lindsay Benton, Jerome Stigler, and special guest choreographers Jeremy McQueen and Martial Roumain.

Iconic Voices will explore some of the most iconic and prolific voices in Arts & Letters including but not limited to pioneers in dance, music, visual arts, theatre and literature. Choreographic work by Eleo Pomare will be presented posthumously as a tribute to one of the iconic voices in dance. The BFA students have engaged in dialogue, research, and choreographic processes that embrace movement inspired and influenced by the Arts & Letters and helped shape the cultures of our world.

Lindsay Benton, assistant professor of Dance Benton at ASU, who has been with the program for three years, has professional experience that lends itself to this worldview consideration of dance.

“So many times, especially in contemporary society, we take for granted that what we do is limited to our experience,” Benton said. “We want to expose the students to a broader way of thinking about dance – not as a closed, individualistic process, but as a truly collaborative and multi-influenced sharing of gifts. I am so grateful for the professional experience I had and continue to enjoy. It helps me pour more into the students here at ASU.”

Guest choreographers are an integral part of BFA majors’ training process as they earn their degrees. “I really enjoy working with the guests who come to campus. Their engagement with us is challenging and rewarding,” says graduating senior Ke’Yana Robinson. “During the four years I’ve been at ASU, I’ve been trained by not only our amazing faculty, but also by at least 10 industry professionals. That’s going to be absolutely invaluable as I graduate.”

ICONIC VOICES is a celebration of this type of training and will both entertain and inform audiences of the many cultural, educational, and artistic influences that can be embraced and celebrated through dance.

“We are aware that our students need tools, skills, and excellent training in order to be successful when they graduate, and we are committed to imparting to them everything we can while they’re here,” said James Atkinson, BFA Program Director at ASU.
